7. The Cedar “Post-Cap” Lantern
For a permanent outdoor fixture, these lanterns are built to sit directly on top of deck posts or fence posts. They provide ambient lighting that delineates the edge of your space, which is both beautiful and functional for safety.
How to Make
Build a simple square wooden frame that fits snugly over the top of your existing fence posts. Use cedar wood, as it is naturally rot-resistant. On the sides of the frame, use a router or a simple jigsaw to cut out decorative shapes or patterns. Line the inside with frosted plexiglass, which protects the light source from wind and rain while diffusing it. Place a solar-powered LED light inside the hollow center of the post-cap.
