8. Chic Brass or Copper Ice Bucket
If you love a glamorous, high-end kitchen aesthetic, a vintage brass or copper ice bucket makes a stunning countertop compost bin. These metallic pieces can often be found at thrift stores and add a warm, metallic shine to your kitchen counters. Double-walled ice buckets are particularly effective because the insulation helps regulate the internal temperature of the bin, slowing down decomposition and odor formation.
Since you do not want to drill holes into a beautiful vintage metal piece, you can use the ice bucket as an outer decorative sleeve. Place a slightly smaller, removable plastic or silicone bucket inside the metal container. This inner bin will hold the food scraps and can be easily lifted out for emptying and washing. The heavy metal lid of the ice bucket will keep fruit flies out, and because it is not completely airtight, it allows enough passive air exchange to prevent rapid anaerobic spoilage.
