6. Ceramic Cookie Jar Conversion
Ceramic cookie jars and canisters are widely available at thrift stores and garage sales in various shapes, colors, and vintage designs. Ceramic is an excellent material for a compost bin because it is heavy, stable, non-porous, and incredibly easy to scrub clean. It also blocks light, which helps slow down the decomposition process and keeps the contents cooler on warm days.
Look for a ceramic jar with a loose-fitting lid, which naturally allows a small amount of air exchange without the need for drilling. If the lid has a tight silicone gasket, you can remove it to allow subtle ventilation, or carefully drill a hole through the ceramic lid using a specialized diamond-tipped drill bit. To prevent odors, place a small, replaceable charcoal filter disc on the inside of the lid. The weight of the ceramic lid also acts as a natural deterrent for curious pets who might try to investigate the kitchen scraps.
