3. Repurposed Paint Can with Charcoal Filter
If you prefer an industrial or rustic aesthetic, an unused metal paint can is an excellent candidate for a DIY compost bin. You can purchase brand-new, empty paint cans at local home improvement stores for a very low cost, or thoroughly clean an old one if it only contained water-based, non-toxic paint. The sturdy metal handle makes it incredibly convenient to carry the bin out to your backyard compost pile when it is full.
To prepare the paint can, drill a dozen small holes in the lid for ventilation. Because paint cans have a tight-fitting lid, you must install a reliable odor barrier. Cut a thick, universal carbon filter sheet to fit the exact diameter of the lid. Secure the filter to the inside of the lid using a hot glue gun, ensuring the glue is applied only to the outer rim of the filter so air can still pass through the center. You can paint the exterior of the can with chalkboard paint to write custom labels or keep track of what items should and should not go inside.
