3. Hand-Painted Terrazzo Pattern Bowl
Terrazzo has experienced a massive revival in interior design, characterized by its playful, mosaic-like appearance. You can easily replicate this Italian-inspired look on a miniature scale using air dry clay and acrylic paints. Unlike the marbling technique where colors are mixed directly into the clay, the terrazzo look is achieved through precise, hand-painted details after the dish has dried, allowing you to have total control over the shape, placement, and color palette of your mosaic flecks.
Start by rolling out a clean slab of white air dry clay, cutting it into a simple circle, and shaping it in a small bowl. Once the dish is completely dry and sanded smooth, it is time to paint. Select a modern color palette, such as mustard yellow, terracotta, sage green, and charcoal gray. Using a fine-tipped detail paintbrush, paint small, irregular, geometric shapes across the surface of the dish. Vary the sizes and angles of these painted flecks to mimic real chipped stone. Leave plenty of white space between the shapes to maintain a clean, contemporary feel. Once the paint is dry, apply a matte or satin varnish to seal the design and give it a professional, ceramic-like finish.
