5. Faux Cactus Potted Rock Garden

If you love the aesthetic of desert succulents but struggle to keep houseplants alive, a faux cactus potted rock garden is the perfect solution. This clever, low-maintenance craft uses upright, oval-shaped river rocks arranged in a terracotta pot to mimic a thriving collection of prickly pear and saguaro cacti. It makes an excellent centerpiece for an outdoor patio table or a sunny porch step.
Gather several smooth, vertical stones of varying heights and widths. Paint each stone in a different shade of green, ranging from deep forest green to bright lime and dusty sage. Once the base coat is dry, use a fine-tipped white paint pen to draw classic cactus patterns. Paint delicate white crosses, starbursts, or dotted lines to represent the needles and spines. To assemble your faux garden, fill a standard terracotta pot with sand, small pebbles, or soil. Bury the bottom third of your painted “cactus” rocks into the substrate so they stand upright. For an extra pop of color, paint tiny pink or yellow flowers at the very top of a few stones to mimic blooming desert cacti.
